The World of Digital Communication for Cameras in vehicles

Camera systems in vehicles with multifunctional displays as well as advanced image data processing in ADAS systems are making the use of cameras with digital interfaces increasingly important. Extremely high data rates, optimised cabling options or diagnostic and upgrade capability in the system open up new application possibilities for camera systems in a wide range of vehicle classes and mobile machinery.

In addition to proven communication standards from the Ethernet world such as 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T, "2-wire" technologies such as BroadR-Reach, 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 are increasingly being used in the automotive sector. This allows compact and cost-effective cabling of sensors and actuators in the vehicle to be realised. Even with longer transmission lines, Ethernet technologies ensure interference-free data transmission.

Advanced standards such as ISO 17215 create the framework for the seamless integration of cameras in particular into vehicle terminals and assistance systems. High-speed serialiser/deserialiser (SerDes) technologies such as GMSL and FPD-Link are suitable for connecting cameras and sensors without image data compression at very high data rates. With correspondingly powerful ECUs, assistance systems through to autonomous driving can be realised.

Depending on the Ethernet standard, transmission distances of up to 100 m to the next active device can be realised. Although 2-wire Ethernet technologies require shorter transmission distances, they manage with more cost-effective cable specifications. Cameras can often be powered via PoE ("Power-over-Ethernet"). Comprehensive systems with different sensors, actuators and control devices are possible via suitable Ethernet switches. Depending on the application, a wide variety of communication protocols at all OSI layer levels are used to configure the devices, transfer data and perform diagnostics.

The latest SerDes technologies for transmitting very high data rates in the automotive environment, such as GMSL2 or FPD-Link III, also offer a data channel to the sensor/camera in addition to the actual user data transmission. This means that the camera can also be reconfigured during use or diagnostic/maintenance functions can be provided with SerDes. The camera can also be supplied with power at the same time via suitable data lines.

Depending on the technology and vehicle platform, various screw and plug-in connections are suitable for connection technology. Whether M12 screw connections, plug-in connections such as HSD and FAKRA or industry solutions such as high-speed ISOBUS in agricultural technology: the right connection technology ensures simple installation and interference-free video data transmission.
